THE EMPEROR OF AMERICA

Theatre adaptation: Michal Ditte

A co-production of Studio 12 and the Pôtoň Theatre is a testimony on the mass emigration of people from the Galicia area in the late 19th and early 20th century. The creators present an emotional image about the suffering and destinies of the migrants. The image is anchored in a deadened, desolate space, filled with mud up to its edge. In today’s socio-political context, the theme is very topical and strikingly precise. The language and visuals of the production is in no way a barrier for the reception of the story. Costumes are not historically exact, nor contemporary or modern – they are historically neutral. The manner in which the theme is presented encloses the actors and spectators in an intimate space, where they establish a community of sorts, which then becomes the recipient of the story of people pushed beyond helplessness. The dramatization of Martin Pollack reportage book is primarily presented through the stories of the characters of Mendel and Rifke Beck, who are universally representative of the countless migrant stories.
