Roland Schimmelpfennig is known to Slovak
theatremakers mostly as an author of dramatic texts using a unique form,
characteristic atmosphere, and distinctive language structure. Schimmelpfennig’s
texts such as Arabian Night, Before/After, Woman from the Past, Push Up
1–3, CET (Central European Time),
The Golden Dragon, or Ídomeneus have gradually – ever since
the first production staged in Slovakia in 2004 – revealed his dramatic
thinking, development in themes, changes in the language structures...
In his masterclass, the author will consider the importance of the formal structure and content of his works and introduce to the participants his opinion about staging contemporary plays, as well as about their place in the repertory of (European and international) theatres. The masterclass will be followed by a discussion and presentation of a collection of Schimmelpfennig’s plays.
Host: Prof. Jana Wild
The event will be accompanied by a presentation of a new publication of the Theatre Institute, attended by the playwright himself. Roland Schimmelpfennig: Plays The first book selection of theatre plays by the eminent German playwright in Slovak contains three plays by Roland Schimmelpfennig that have not yet been translated or staged in Slovakia: The Animal Kingdom (Das Reich der Tiere), The Black Water (Das schwarze Wasser) and Winter Solstice (Wintersonnenwende).
